- Biocompatibles’ main business area is implantable beads that are used to block blood supply to diseased tissues and deliver cytotoxic drugs to treat liver cancer. Products for prostate cancer were acquired in July 2008. New markets in colorectal cancer, diabetes, stroke and cardiac disease are being developed.

Diabetes, moles and folds FY09 showed sales of £26.6m, up 48%, with revenue guidance of £28-32m for FY10. Bead sales grew strongly to £12m. The CM3 diabetes product with AstraZeneca is now in Phase I and adds 120p to the indicative value. In addition, Biocompatibles has acquired a handheld GP device to diagnose melanoma, while Novabel cosmetic filler beads with Merz may start to show some sales in 2010. We expect stronger growth from 2011 onwards as trial data is reported. Research type: Update |

Precision V sales boost Last years Precision V study appears to have driven a significant acceleration in DC bead sales as it showed better outcomes in advanced liver cancer with lower side effects. This growth could give rise to profitability in FY11, while a pipeline of trials due to report in 2011-12 should further support sales growth. Interim results showed a 120% rise in US volume bead sales, while BrachySciences made 15% volume gains in a tough market and AstraZeneca income boosted CellMed by 183%. Stent royalties were level at £2m. Cash remains strong at £29.5m as of 30 June. Research type: Review |

Q1 management update Biocompatibles Q1 interim management statement highlights progress on several key projects. Further positive clinical data on DC Beads in liver cancer has been reported. The Dermal bead product received a CE mark for EU sales in March and the partner, Merz, has started initial marketing. Meanwhile, the SPACE clinical trial with Bayer is believed to have started recruitment. Sales of DC Beads are reported to be strong and ahead of expectations. Delivering value Biocompatibles presents an attractive, debt-free investment case, supported by revenues, dividends and £34m of cash. The main product range of implantable anti-cancer beads had sales of £6m, augmented last year with the acquisition of a US business with annual $9.7m sales in prostate cancer. In therapeutic peptides, AstraZeneca has taken an €8.8m option for Type 2 diabetes and a cell-based stroke trial is underway. Royalties from the Endeavor stent enable a 5p dividend.
